Bayern Confirm Saibari Surgery and Gnabry Injury After Klassiker Blow

Bayern Confirm Saibari Surgery and Gnabry Injury After Klassiker Blow
← Back to Football News

Bayern Munich’s injury concerns deepened on Sunday after the club confirmed that Ismael Saibari has undergone surgery on a torn syndesmosis ligament in his right ankle and Serge Gnabry has sustained a muscle injury in the back of his left thigh.

Both players were forced out of Saturday’s 2-2 Bundesliga draw with Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena. Bayern said they will be unavailable “for the time being” but did not provide return dates for either player.

The timing gives the update added weight. Bayern and Dortmund entered Der Klassiker unbeaten and level near the top of the Bundesliga, and the draw left the rivals locked together on points. Bayern protected first place, but the physical cost of the match may influence how the next phase of their season develops.

Confirmed: Saibari has surgery, Gnabry suffers thigh injury

Saibari was hurt during a first-half attacking move and had to be replaced in the 29th minute. Bayern’s medical bulletin confirmed a tear of the syndesmosis ligament in his right ankle and stated that the Morocco international has already undergone successful surgery.

Gnabry followed him off only two minutes later. The German attacker was diagnosed with a muscle injury in the posterior area of his left thigh. Bayern have not specified the grade of the injury or announced a recovery timetable.

Those are the confirmed diagnoses. Michael Olise also left the Klassiker after appearing to suffer a problem late in the match, but Bayern’s Sunday update did not provide a diagnosis for him. Until the club issues further information, his condition should be treated as unresolved rather than placed in the same category as the confirmed absences.

The injuries interrupted a dramatic contest. Konrad Laimer put Bayern ahead before halftime, Serhou Guirassy equalised for Dortmund, and Dayot Upamecano restored the home side’s advantage. Fabio Silva’s 89th-minute goal secured a 2-2 draw for the visitors. Harry Kane also missed a penalty and struck the woodwork as Bayern failed to turn their stronger attacking periods into three points.

FootyTactix analysis: Bayern lose two different attacking options

The immediate problem is not simply the number of unavailable players. Saibari and Gnabry offer different ways to move an attack forward, so losing both in the same match reduces Bayern’s ability to change the shape and tempo of a game.

Saibari’s absence removes an option who can receive between midfield and attack, carry the ball through pressure and arrive in advanced central areas. A syndesmosis injury requiring surgery is a significant confirmed setback, even though Bayern have not placed a date on his return.

Gnabry gives Bayern direct running, movement behind a defensive line and the flexibility to operate from more than one attacking position. His thigh injury may force the coaching staff to redistribute minutes across the front line and be more selective about when to use its remaining pace.

The draw with Dortmund offered an early picture of the tactical complication. Bayern still created chances after the two first-half substitutions, but the bench was asked to solve an unexpected double disruption while the match remained finely balanced. When two attacking roles change in quick succession, the effect reaches beyond the replacements themselves: pressing responsibilities, passing connections and the spaces occupied around the striker must all be reorganised.

That does not mean Bayern’s attack will suddenly stop functioning. The squad retains quality, and the team produced enough opportunities to win the Klassiker. The concern is the loss of choice. Fewer healthy profiles make Bayern easier to anticipate and leave less protection against another injury or a demanding run of matches.

What the update means now

Bayern’s next priority is clarity. The club has confirmed the nature of the injuries but has not estimated how long Saibari or Gnabry will be unavailable. Recovery from surgery will be managed differently from a muscle injury, and the two players should not be placed on a shared timetable without medical guidance.

The absence of a confirmed update on Olise is also important. It would be premature to describe Bayern as missing three attackers indefinitely. At present, two absences are confirmed and one situation remains open.

For Dortmund, the late equaliser preserved momentum and kept the Bundesliga’s leading pair together. For Bayern, the same evening produced a more complicated outcome: first place remained intact, but the attacking rotation became thinner.

The result itself will be remembered for missed chances and a late response. The consequences may last longer. Bayern now have to protect their position while managing two confirmed injuries that remove different qualities from the same attacking unit.
