Bukayo Saka’s early departure from Arsenal’s 2–2 Champions League draw at Bayern Munich has created a major fitness concern for Mikel Arteta at a critical point in the season.
The England international was forced off after approximately ten minutes at the Allianz Arena. Saka appeared to feel sharp pain in his left thigh after playing the ball, received treatment on the pitch and was replaced by Eberechi Eze.
Arsenal recovered impressively from that disruption. Eze opened the scoring in the 25th minute, Alphonso Davies equalised for Bayern ten minutes later and Harry Kane converted a second-half penalty to put the German champions ahead. Declan Rice then produced Arsenal’s response, finishing eight minutes from time to secure a valuable away point.
What has been confirmed
Arteta identified the problem as a quadriceps injury and admitted that the initial signs were concerning. Arsenal must now wait for further medical assessment to establish the severity of the damage.
No official recovery timetable has been announced. Reports claiming Saka will miss a specific number of weeks should therefore be treated as speculation until Arsenal confirms the scan results.
The manner of the injury will naturally worry supporters because there was no obvious collision immediately before Saka went down. However, the fact that he left the field early does not establish the grade of the injury or how long he might be unavailable.
Saka has experienced fitness problems during recent seasons. A hamstring operation in December 2024 kept him out for more than three months, while an Achilles issue caused him to miss seven matches last season. Arsenal are also monitoring winger Christos Tzolis after a hamstring injury suffered on international duty.
FootyTactix tactical analysis
Saka’s importance to Arsenal extends far beyond his goals and assists. His positioning stretches opposing defences, creates passing lanes for Martin Ødegaard and forces opponents to commit additional protection to Arsenal’s right side.
When Saka receives the ball near the touchline, defenders must prepare for several different actions. He can attack the outside, move inside onto his stronger left foot or combine with a supporting midfielder and full-back. That uncertainty is central to Arsenal’s ability to control territory and create overloads.
Without him, Arteta may need to redistribute those responsibilities rather than expecting one player to reproduce Saka’s complete role.
Eze demonstrated Arsenal’s depth by scoring after replacing him in Munich. His movement can add creativity between the lines, although his natural tendency to operate in central spaces gives the attack a different shape. Noni Madueke offers more direct running and one-on-one threat, making him another possible solution if Saka is unavailable.
Arsenal could also become more dependent on Ødegaard to create from inside-right positions. That approach may preserve some of their combination play, but opponents would have less reason to defend the touchline aggressively if Arsenal cannot maintain a genuine wide threat.
The defensive effect should not be overlooked either. Saka understands Arsenal’s pressing structure and regularly helps the team trap opponents near the sideline. Changing the winger can alter the timing of that press and the protection offered to the right-back.
Arteta’s task would therefore involve more than selecting a replacement. He would need to adjust Arsenal’s spacing, pressing triggers and route into the penalty area while ensuring the team does not become predictable.
What happens next
Arsenal are scheduled to host Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, giving Saka only a short recovery window even if the injury proves minor. The sensible expectation is that the club will complete its assessment before making a decision.
The 2–2 result in Munich showed Arsenal possess the resilience and squad quality to respond when an important player leaves unexpectedly. Eze’s goal and Rice’s late equaliser ensured the night did not end in defeat.
The larger question is whether that depth can sustain Arsenal over several fixtures if their leading right-sided attacker requires time away. Until the medical findings are released, that question remains unanswered—but Saka’s fitness has immediately become one of Arsenal’s most important storylines.
