Champions League Opening Night Delivers Goals, Drama and Major Statements
The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase began with goals, close finishes and encouraging opening victories for several of Europe’s leading clubs.
Real Madrid defeated Inter 2–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, Manchester City overcame Porto 2–0, and Aston Villa earned an entertaining 3–2 away victory against Club Brugge.
Borussia Dortmund and Real Betis also prevailed in five-goal contests, while AEK Athens marked their return to the competition with a narrow home win against LASK.
Real Madrid survive Inter pressure
José Mourinho began the Champions League chapter of his second spell at Real Madrid with a 2–1 victory over one of his former clubs.
Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Federico Valverde doubled Madrid’s advantage nine minutes later.
Inter created enough opportunities to keep the hosts under pressure, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced an influential performance in his 100th Champions League appearance.
Carlos Augusto converted Lautaro Martínez’s delivery to reduce the deficit late in the second half. Madrid survived the closing pressure, however, and secured their first three points of the league phase.
The result was positive for Mourinho, although Inter’s ability to create chances showed that Madrid still have defensive areas to improve.
Haaland leads Manchester City in Porto
Manchester City required patience before completing a 2–0 victory away to Porto.
Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa frustrated City during the first half, denying Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki.
Haaland eventually broke the resistance after halftime, heading home a cross from Matheus Nunes. The striker added his second goal during stoppage time following Rayan Aït-Nouri’s pass.
The two goals took Haaland to 59 goals in 59 Champions League appearances—another remarkable milestone in his European career.
City’s controlled second-half performance demonstrated their ability to remain composed when an opponent successfully disrupts their initial attacking rhythm.
Aston Villa win five-goal contest in Belgium
Aston Villa earned one of the night’s most entertaining victories by defeating Club Brugge 3–2.
Captain John McGinn scored the first goal of the new Champions League league phase in the 11th minute. Hugo Vetlesen equalised eight minutes later, but Emiliano Buendía quickly restored Villa’s lead.
Nicolas Jackson then scored his first Aston Villa goal shortly before halftime, giving the visitors a two-goal advantage.
Nicolò Tresoldi converted a penalty for Club Brugge after the interval and later struck the post as the Belgian side pushed for an equaliser. Villa survived the pressure to begin their European campaign with an important away victory.
The performance showed Villa’s attacking quality, although conceding chances after establishing a commanding lead will give the coaching staff something to address.
Dortmund withstand late Villarreal scare
Borussia Dortmund defeated Villarreal 3–2 in a match in which all five goals arrived during the second half.
A Renato Veiga own goal gave Dortmund the lead before Santiago Mouriño equalised for Villarreal. Serhou Guirassy then struck twice, including one goal from the penalty spot, to place Dortmund in control.
A heavily deflected Nicolas Pépé free-kick produced a late Villarreal goal, but Dortmund protected their advantage and continued their impressive Champions League home record.
Guirassy’s movement and finishing proved decisive during a match that changed rapidly after a goalless opening half.
Betis complete comeback in Lille
Real Betis celebrated their return to the Champions League after a 21-year absence with a 3–2 comeback victory over Lille.
Lille led at halftime through goals from Ayase Ueda and Alexsandro, with Marc Bartra scoring Betis’ first equaliser between the two efforts.
Bartra headed in his second goal shortly after the break before Troy Parrott completed the comeback. Lille’s attempt to respond became more difficult when Ethan Mbappé received a red card.
The victory represented a memorable return to Europe’s leading competition for Betis.
AEK make winning return
AEK Athens secured a 1–0 victory over Champions League newcomers LASK.
Răzvan Marin’s first-half free-kick proved decisive, giving AEK their first victory in the main Champions League competition in 20 years.
LASK improved after halftime but could not find an equaliser against an experienced AEK defence.
Opening-night results
AEK Athens 1–0 LASK
Club Brugge 2–3 Aston Villa
Borussia Dortmund 3–2 Villarreal
Porto 0–2 Manchester City
Lille 2–3 Real Betis
Real Madrid 2–1 Inter
The opening matches produced 20 goals across six fixtures and immediately demonstrated the competitive nature of the league phase.
Real Madrid and Aston Villa were forced to survive late pressure, while Manchester City’s patience and Haaland’s finishing eventually decided their contest in Porto.
It is still too early to draw conclusions about which clubs will challenge for the trophy, but the opening night provided an exciting first look at several potential contenders.
