Champions League Results: Barcelona, PSG, Liverpool and Arsenal Win
← Back to Football News

The 2026–27 UEFA Champions League began with a dramatic night of European football as several leading contenders made immediate statements.

Barcelona and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain delivered the most commanding performances, while Liverpool, Arsenal, Sporting and Stuttgart also collected important opening victories.

With every result contributing to one 36-team league table, teams cannot afford to take the early fixtures lightly. Goal difference could eventually become decisive, making the emphatic wins recorded by Barcelona and PSG particularly valuable.

Barcelona 5–1 Feyenoord

Barcelona produced one of the strongest performances of the opening round, overwhelming Feyenoord in a convincing 5–1 victory.

Raphinha gave Barcelona the perfect start by scoring in the third minute before Karim Adeyemi doubled the advantage with a curling finish. Raphinha struck again, while Lamine Yamal added a cleverly taken free kick to place the match firmly beyond Feyenoord.

Substitute Gabriel Jesus completed Barcelona’s scoring, with Sem Steijn providing Feyenoord’s only consolation late in the contest.

Barcelona’s movement, attacking speed and ability to create chances from different areas caused Feyenoord problems throughout the match. It was an impressive opening statement from a side expected to challenge deep into the competition.

Paris Saint-Germain 6–1 Slovan Bratislava

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain started their campaign with an emphatic 6–1 home victory over Slovan Bratislava.

PSG controlled possession and repeatedly opened spaces in the visitors’ defence with quick combinations and intelligent movement. Ferran Torres led the scoring with a hat-trick as the French side demonstrated the attacking quality and squad depth that helped establish them among Europe’s leading teams.

Slovan Bratislava managed to score, but the difference in speed, technical quality and finishing was clear.

The result gives PSG an excellent early position in the league table and sends a warning to the other contenders. However, stronger opponents will present a much more demanding examination of their defensive organisation.

Liverpool 2–1 AtlĂ©tico Madrid

Liverpool earned a hard-fought 2–1 victory over AtlĂ©tico Madrid in one of the evening’s most competitive fixtures.

AtlĂ©tico’s defensive discipline and experience made the match difficult, but Liverpool maintained their intensity and eventually found the decisive moments. The English side had to remain patient against opponents capable of slowing the game and creating danger on the counterattack.

Liverpool’s victory may not have been as spectacular as Barcelona’s or PSG’s, but collecting three points against a strong AtlĂ©tico team could prove extremely important later in the campaign.

For Atlético, the performance offered encouragement despite the defeat. Their organisation and competitiveness should still make them difficult opponents throughout the league phase.

Napoli 0–1 Arsenal

Arsenal secured an impressive 1–0 away victory against Napoli, with Martin Ødegaard scoring the decisive goal.

European away matches often require patience and control rather than constant attacking football. Arsenal managed the occasion effectively, remained disciplined without the ball and protected their narrow advantage.

Napoli created pressure in search of an equaliser, but Arsenal’s defensive structure held firm. Taking three points away from home against a strong Italian opponent represents an excellent beginning to the competition.

While other teams attracted attention with high-scoring victories, Arsenal’s controlled performance demonstrated another important quality: the ability to win a close and demanding European match.

Sporting 3–1 Galatasaray

Sporting recovered from falling behind to defeat Galatasaray 3–1.

The Portuguese side responded impressively after conceding, showing composure instead of allowing the early setback to disrupt their approach. Sporting increased their attacking pressure, controlled more of the match and completed a deserved comeback.

Galatasaray demonstrated that they possess enough attacking quality to trouble opponents, but their inability to maintain control after taking the lead proved costly.

Sporting’s response will give the team confidence as the competition progresses. Recovering from a losing position on the opening night is a positive sign of character and tactical flexibility.

Stuttgart 3–1 Viking

Ermedin Demirović delivered one of the night’s outstanding individual performances by scoring a rapid hat-trick in Stuttgart’s 3–1 victory over Champions League newcomers Viking.

Demirović opened the scoring before Zlatko Tripić brought Viking level. Stuttgart responded immediately, with Demirović scoring twice more to complete his hat-trick within a remarkable 12-minute period.

Viking showed courage and briefly threatened to make the contest difficult, but Stuttgart’s attacking response proved decisive.

The German side will be pleased with both the result and the ruthless finishing of their leading striker. For Viking, the match demonstrated the speed at which mistakes are punished at Champions League level.

FootyTactix Verdict

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain produced the biggest statements of the night, combining dominant attacking football with comfortable winning margins.

Arsenal’s disciplined away victory may be equally significant because points collected in difficult stadiums can shape the final league standings. Liverpool also passed a demanding opening test against AtlĂ©tico Madrid, while Sporting displayed resilience and Stuttgart benefited from an exceptional individual performance.

The opening matches offered goals, tactical battles and several reminders of how unforgiving the Champions League can be.

It remains too early to determine which teams will emerge as the leading contenders, but Barcelona and PSG have established the early benchmark. Arsenal and Liverpool also demonstrated that they possess the organisation and mentality required to compete against strong European opposition.
