Two significant injury updates have changed the outlook around prominent teams in the NBA and NFL. Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren is expected to miss eight to ten weeks with a small tear in his right patellar tendon, while the Denver Broncos have placed running back RJ Harvey on injured reserve because of a knee injury.
Both updates are confirmed. Holmgren’s timetable was announced after specialist consultations and treatment, while Denver completed Harvey’s move to injured reserve before its divisional game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The situations are different in severity, timing and recovery process. Their shared effect is immediate: two teams must redistribute important minutes and touches while preparing for demanding stretches of their schedules.
Confirmed NBA update: Holmgren out eight to ten weeks
The Thunder said Holmgren began experiencing mild discomfort in his right knee after Oklahoma City’s game last Sunday. Following consultations with specialists, he underwent what the team described as a biological treatment to address a small patellar tendon tear.
The official recovery estimate is eight to ten weeks. That places Holmgren’s expected absence at roughly two months, although the team has not announced a fixed return date.
His injury adds to Oklahoma City’s early-season availability problems. The Thunder have already been forced to adjust roles across the rotation, and losing a starting center affects both ends of the floor. Holmgren provides rim protection, defensive range and a floor-spacing option who can pull opposing big men away from the basket.
The confirmed timetable should prevent the situation from being described as indefinite. However, eight to ten weeks represents a substantial portion of the regular season, and the final return will still depend on how the knee responds during rehabilitation.
Confirmed NFL update: Broncos place Harvey on injured reserve
Denver placed Harvey on injured reserve after a knee problem appeared on the team’s injury report during the week. He was ruled out before the Chiefs game and must now miss at least four contests under injured-reserve rules.
The Broncos said Harvey would be eligible to return as early as their Week 13 game against Miami. Eligibility does not guarantee activation on that date, and Denver has not issued a more precise medical timetable.
Harvey has produced 304 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns during the 2026 season while averaging 6.2 yards per touch. His absence removes a productive option from Denver’s backfield ahead of an important divisional test.
The Broncos elevated running back Cody Schrader from the practice squad as part of their roster moves. That is a confirmed response to the need for additional depth, but it does not establish exactly how Denver will divide its rushing attempts, pass-protection assignments or receiving work.
FootyTactix analysis: depth becomes a tactical requirement
For Oklahoma City, Holmgren’s absence changes more than the center rotation. His combination of length and shooting allows the Thunder to defend the rim without sacrificing offensive spacing. Replacing his minutes may require different lineups for different matchups rather than one player reproducing every part of his role.
The defensive impact could be especially important. Without Holmgren behind the first line of pressure, Oklahoma City’s perimeter defenders may have less margin for error. On offense, opposing centers can remain closer to the paint if the replacement lineup provides less shooting threat.
Denver faces a shorter minimum absence but a more immediate preparation problem. Running-back availability shapes early-down play selection, protection packages and the screen game. Harvey’s efficiency had given the Broncos another way to create yards without placing every possession on the quarterback.
Schrader’s elevation gives Denver an available body, yet the coaching staff must decide whether to preserve the existing playbook or narrow assignments around the remaining backs. That decision will influence personnel groupings as much as the raw number of carries.
What remains uncertain
Neither development should be extended beyond the confirmed information. Holmgren has an eight-to-ten-week estimate, but no exact return date. Harvey can become eligible in Week 13, but Denver has not guaranteed that he will be medically ready then.
The competitive impact will also depend on how each team adapts. Injuries reduce options; they do not automatically determine results. Oklahoma City still has time to redesign its rotation, while Denver must make a faster adjustment within the weekly rhythm of an NFL season.
For FootyTactix analysis and future selections, these updates matter because availability changes matchup assumptions. Rebounding, interior defence, rushing efficiency and workload distribution must now be reassessed using the confirmed active rosters rather than season-long averages alone.
