Premier League Saturday: Liverpool Stumble, Chelsea Held as Early-Season Surprises Continue
The Premier League delivered another afternoon of surprises on Saturday, September 12, as Liverpool and Chelsea both dropped points while Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town claimed impressive away victories.
With the new season still taking shape, Saturday’s results offered another reminder that reputation alone will not be enough in what is already developing into an unpredictable Premier League campaign.
Liverpool Frustrated by Fulham at Anfield
Liverpool were held to a 0–0 draw by Fulham at Anfield after struggling to turn possession and attacking pressure into goals.
For a team expected to challenge near the top of the table, it was another frustrating result. Liverpool have now drawn three of their opening four Premier League matches under Andoni Iraola.
Fulham, meanwhile, will be delighted with the point. Keeping Liverpool scoreless at Anfield required discipline, organisation and concentration throughout the match.
FootyTactix Take
Liverpool remain a dangerous side, but their early results suggest bettors and football analysts should be careful about automatically treating them as heavy favourites simply because they are playing at Anfield.
Form, chance creation and current tactical performance matter just as much as the name on the shirt.
Chelsea Survive a Major Hull City Scare
Chelsea also failed to collect maximum points after a dramatic 2–2 draw with Hull City at Stamford Bridge.
Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an early lead, but Hull responded superbly. Mohamed Belloumi scored twice to put the newly promoted visitors ahead before João Pedro rescued Chelsea with a second-half equaliser.
Hull's performance was another indication that promoted teams cannot simply be dismissed when analysing Premier League fixtures.
Chelsea showed attacking quality, but their defensive vulnerability gave Hull opportunities to punish them.
FootyTactix Take
This was exactly the type of fixture that demonstrates why very short match-winner odds do not necessarily mean low risk.
When a strong favourite has defensive weaknesses, markets involving goals can sometimes provide a different angle from simply backing the favourite to win.
Nottingham Forest Punish Aston Villa Late
Nottingham Forest secured an impressive 2–1 victory away at Aston Villa, with the decisive goal arriving late in the contest.
Liam Delap put Forest ahead before Aston Villa finally found the net. Villa's response appeared capable of earning them a point, but Igor Jesus struck in the closing stages to give Forest all three points.
It was another difficult result for Villa and another valuable victory for Forest.
For analysts, Villa's early-season struggles are becoming increasingly important. Historical reputation should never outweigh what a team is currently producing on the pitch.
Ipswich Stun Crystal Palace in Five-Goal Thriller
One of Saturday's most dramatic matches came at Selhurst Park, where Ipswich Town defeated Crystal Palace 3–2.
The match included five goals, a Crystal Palace red card and a stoppage-time winner.
After Palace were reduced to ten men, Ipswich took advantage, but the contest remained alive until the closing moments. Palace fought back to 2–2 before Zian Flemming struck in stoppage time to secure a memorable away victory for Ipswich.
For a promoted side, collecting points in difficult away matches can make an enormous difference over the course of a season.
Bournemouth and Brentford Share Four Goals
Bournemouth and Brentford also contributed to an entertaining afternoon, finishing 2–2.
Bournemouth recovered after falling behind and eventually moved into the lead, but Brentford responded to preserve their unbeaten start.
The result continued a wider theme from Saturday: favourites and home teams found very little comfort.
What Saturday's Results Tell Us
The biggest lesson from today's Premier League action is simple: never judge a fixture by reputation alone.
Liverpool could not break down Fulham.
Chelsea could not beat newly promoted Hull at Stamford Bridge.
Aston Villa lost at home to Nottingham Forest.
Crystal Palace were beaten at home by Ipswich.
Football remains unpredictable, and that is precisely why serious match analysis should consider current form, tactical matchups, injuries, defensive performance and recent attacking numbers before reaching a conclusion.
At FootyTactix, our approach is not about claiming that any football prediction is guaranteed. The goal is to study the available information, identify potentially stronger angles and understand the risk attached to every selection.
And if Saturday's Premier League results taught us anything, it is that even the strongest-looking favourite can have a difficult afternoon.
More Big Football Still to Come
The football is not finished yet.
Tottenham face Everton, while Arsenal travel to Sunderland looking to continue their strong start. In Spain, Real Madrid host Rayo Vallecano in another major fixture on Saturday's schedule.
There is still plenty of football — and plenty more analysis — to come.
