Barcelona Defensive Crisis Deepens as Espart Faces Seven Weeks Out

Barcelona’s defensive problems have deepened after the club confirmed that Xavi Espart will be unavailable for approximately seven weeks.

Medical examinations revealed an injury to the syndesmosis joint in Espart’s right ankle. Barcelona said the damage resulted from a collision with an opposing player during Sunday’s 2–1 El Clásico defeat against Real Madrid.

Confirmed facts

The 19-year-old attempted to continue after the incident but eventually required treatment and was replaced by Alejandro Balde in the 30th minute. His withdrawal forced Hansi Flick to reorganise the back line during one of Barcelona’s most demanding matches of the season.

Espart had become an important member of Flick’s squad during the opening months of the campaign. The academy graduate has made nine appearances this season, contributing two goals and two assists while providing options on either side of the defence.

His absence comes at a particularly difficult time. Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia and Jules Koundé are also unavailable through injury, leaving Barcelona with only João Cancelo, Balde, Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín as recognised first-team defenders currently available.

Those four players completed the second half of El Clásico after Espart was removed. Although Barcelona improved after halftime and equalised through Raphinha, Real Madrid eventually exploited space during a late transition to score the winning goal.

Barcelona have not announced a precise return date for Espart. A seven-week recovery period would place his potential comeback in the middle of December, but his availability will depend on how the ankle responds during rehabilitation.

The club’s final scheduled match of 2026 is set for December 20, meaning the young defender could face a race to play again before the end of the calendar year.

Espart’s injury creates a problem that extends beyond simply replacing one full-back.

Flick’s approach depends heavily on defenders who can operate in advanced positions, support the press and recover quickly when possession is lost. Espart’s ability to cover both defensive flanks had given Barcelona valuable flexibility, particularly while other senior defenders were unavailable.

The immediate solution appears to be Cancelo on the right and Balde on the left, with Cubarsí and Martín occupying the central positions. That unit offers technical quality and attacking width, but Barcelona now have very little experienced cover if another defender suffers an injury, suspension or loss of form.

The reduced depth could also influence how aggressively Flick positions his full-backs. Sending both wide defenders forward simultaneously creates attacking overloads, but it also leaves the central defenders exposed during transitions. Real Madrid’s late winner in El Clásico demonstrated how quickly those spaces can become dangerous.

Flick may therefore need to introduce more protection from midfield. A holding player dropping between the centre-backs could help Barcelona build with three players behind the ball and reduce the distance defenders must cover when possession changes.

Another possibility is increased involvement for academy defenders. Barcelona have consistently trusted young players when injuries have limited the first-team squad, and Espart’s own development demonstrates the value of that pathway. However, promoting another inexperienced defender during a demanding run of fixtures would bring its own risks.

The timing is especially uncomfortable because Barcelona must respond immediately to the Clásico defeat. Their unbeaten league start has ended, Real Madrid have reduced the gap at the top, and the defensive unit now requires another forced adjustment.

Espart’s production will also be missed. Two goals and two assists from nine appearances represent a meaningful attacking contribution for a teenage defender. Replacing his minutes is possible; replacing his versatility and influence may be considerably harder.

Barcelona remain well positioned in the title race, but their margin for defensive error has narrowed. Until Koundé, Garcia, Christensen or Espart returns, Flick must manage four available defenders through domestic and European competition.

That challenge could shape Barcelona’s results during the final weeks of 2026.
