Real Madrid reopened the LaLiga title race on Sunday with a dramatic 2–1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou, powered by two goals from Kylian Mbappé.
The result delivered Barcelona’s first league defeat of the season and reduced the gap between the rivals to three points. Barcelona remain top with 27 points from ten matches, Atlético Madrid sit second on 26, and Real Madrid have climbed to 24.
Confirmed facts
Madrid entered El Clásico without Thibaut Courtois, who was ruled out earlier in the day because of a flu-like illness. Andriy Lunin replaced him in goal, while José Mourinho’s side approached the contest with a compact defensive structure and a clear focus on attacking quickly when Barcelona lost possession.
The visitors produced the more purposeful early attacks. Arda Güler had two opportunities before Mbappé opened the scoring in the 41st minute.
Yan Diomandé delivered a cross from the left, and Gerard Martín’s attempted clearance deflected against Mbappé before finding the net. The goal gave Madrid a deserved advantage after a disciplined first-half performance.
Barcelona nearly responded before halftime, but Lamine Yamal could not convert from close range. Madrid also threatened to double their lead when Diomandé broke through, only to send his effort into the side netting.
The hosts improved after the interval and equalised in the 61st minute. Pedri found Raphinha, who finished to bring Barcelona level and change the momentum inside the stadium.
Madrid refused to retreat completely. Güler forced a strong save from Joan García, while Lunin produced an important stop to prevent Barcelona from taking the lead.
The decisive moment arrived late in the match. Madrid recovered possession and moved forward through Jude Bellingham, Güler and Eduardo Camavinga. Camavinga escaped his defender and supplied Mbappé, who finished into the open goal to secure all three points.
Mbappé’s brace took him to 11 goals in ten LaLiga appearances this season. Real Madrid’s official report also credited the forward with reaching 100 goals for the club.
The victory marked Mourinho’s successful return to El Clásico, 13 years after his first spell as Real Madrid manager ended.
FootyTactix analysis
Madrid’s victory was built on more than Mbappé’s finishing. Mourinho’s tactical plan limited Barcelona’s ability to turn possession into clear chances while preserving enough attacking ambition to threaten on transitions.
Barcelona controlled long stretches of the ball, but Madrid were more direct and decisive. The visitors protected central areas, forced the hosts toward wider positions and attacked the spaces left behind whenever Barcelona committed numbers forward.
Diomandé provided an important outlet on the left, stretching the defence and helping create the opening goal. Bellingham and Camavinga supplied the athletic power needed to carry Madrid through pressure, while Güler connected midfield possession to the forward line.
Lunin’s performance was also significant. Replacing Courtois shortly before one of the season’s most demanding fixtures could have unsettled Madrid’s defence, yet the goalkeeper remained composed and made a crucial intervention while the match was level.
For Barcelona, the defeat exposed the risk attached to their aggressive positioning. Their pressure produced the equaliser and several promising moments, but the late winner came after possession was lost with space available for Madrid to counterattack.
The result does not remove Barcelona from control of the title race. They remain leaders and have demonstrated the league’s strongest attacking form through the opening ten matches. However, their advantage is no longer comfortable, and their unbeaten record has disappeared.
Real Madrid leave Camp Nou with something more valuable than three points. They have proved they can absorb pressure, adapt to a late goalkeeping change and defeat the leaders in their own stadium.
Mbappé supplied the decisive quality, but the broader message concerns the championship. Madrid have moved within one result of Barcelona, Atlético remain between them, and the early LaLiga title race has suddenly become much tighter.
